Socio-economic sciences and the humanities (including security)

Social sciences also provide key tools to address social challenges posed by vulnerability, poverty and weak governance. Six out of the 15 ACP countries of the Pacific are least-developed countries, and economies of the small islands are strongly dependent on neighbouring powers such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, United States, and more recently, China. Some countries have also experienced political instability and conflicts and may be undermined by weak institutions, governance failures, low economic growth, high rates of unemployment and poverty, which all contribute to state fragility. In this context, PACE-Net could be a key instrument to target support for S&T research addressing the root causes of these social challenges.
