Oceania is a region of high diversity and challenging contrasts, which entails specific development needs but also provides a rich opportunity for S&T to be strongly involved in helping the small islands countries and territories to develop public policies for sustainable development . In addition, numerous global change research themes of international interest can be locally addressed as exemplary case studies.
The themes identified for the FP7 cooperation programme correspond to major fields in the progress of knowledge and technology, where research must be supported and strengthened to address social, economic, environmental and industrial European or global challenges. The overarching aim is to contribute to sustainable development. These are some of the high level themes proposed for EU action.
