In 2011 the Pacific region agreed to develop an integrated regional strategy for disaster risk management and climate change by 2015 to succeed the current separate frameworks: Pacific Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Management Framework for Action 2005– 2015 and Pacific Islands Framework for Action on Climate Change 2006–2015. As part of the process of developing the integrated strategy, SPC, UNISDR and SPREP agreed to convene a joint meeting bringing together actors in disaster risk management and climate change in 2013 to discuss key issues, challenges and opportunities that can be taken into consideration in the formulation of the integrated strategy.
Both disasters and climate change can impact on sustainable development. In beginning the development of the strategy, the Pacific is the first region in the world to take steps to provide an integrated response to them at the regional, national and sub national level.
