APRU International Workshop on Coastal Cities, Climate Change and Sea Level Rise, San Diego, 5-7 September 2012.

The APRU Sustainability and Climate Change (SCC) Program (formerly known as the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies (CMAS) Program) is holding a major International Workshop on Coastal Cities, Climate Change and Sea Level Rise at the University of California San Diego, 5-7 September 2012.

Hosted by the Sustainability Solutions Institute at UC San Diego, this workshop will look at the science and policy implications of the latest research on sea level rise including:

• Projections for coastal risks from sea level rise and storm surges;
• Differences between the east and west coasts of the Pacific Ocean;
• Possible impacts of identified tipping points;
• Current ranking of possible impacts of proposed mitigations;
• Implications of sea level rise for policy-making of coastal cities and Pacific Rim universities;
• and Strengthening the consultative network of regional academic professionals capable of providing advice on this shared threat.

We invite APRU presidents to send to the workshop:
(a) subject specialists in the science and social science of climate change and sea level rise or related areas (e.g. water, flooding, natural hazards); and
(b) key university leaders with responsibility for sustainability policy and relations with their cities and communities.

We intend to draw speakers from the participants nominated by APRU universities and therefore request biodata and specific recommendations on the suitability of nominated participants to contribute to an international discussion as a speaker. We hope to attract one or two participants from each member university on a self-funded basis.
